The Dutch military, which is part of NATO, is currently undergoing major restructuring. By 2000, it will have been transformed from an organization focusing on an anti-Soviet defense role into a rapidly deployable, more flexible military force. The plans include a 44% reduction in personnel and the abolition of compulsory military service. Most of the reforms affect the army, which will be reduced from three to two divisions. The Netherlands has a large defense industry, specializing in submarines, weapons systems and aircraft. The air force is equipped with US F-16s, which were partly developed with the Dutch Fokker company.
